Many people believe that living together before marriage is a good test of compatibility. In fact, nearly 50% of young adults in their 20's and 30's cohabit (Bumpass & Lu 1998; Bumpass & Sweet 1995; Sweet 1989). But studies show that cohabiting relationships differ significantly from marriages. For one, they are much shorter lived. Half of them end within a year due to marriage or break up. (Seltzer, 2000). And sadly, more than 40% of these cohabitations now involve children. (Rutgers Marriage Project, 2005)
